William Floyd Elementary School is set to host a St. Baldrick’s Foundation "Brave the Shave" event on March 14, from 9 am to 12 pm. The event aims to support childhood cancer research, with all proceeds going directly to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants will shave their heads as part of the fundraiser, including William Floyd Elementary School principal Dr. Keith Fasciana.
The William Floyd School District has been involved in multiple St. Baldrick’s fundraisers over recent years, collectively raising more than $10,000 for the cause.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation was established in 1999 with an initial goal of shaving 17 heads and raising $17,000. Over the past 26 years, it has raised over $352 million. This funding has contributed to the approval of a new drug by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that significantly improves cure rates for high-risk neuroblastoma patients.
The William Floyd High School Barbering Academy will assist volunteers at the event. Led by instructor Cara Cliffe, this academy is part of the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, which offers various pathways such as business management and engineering.
William Floyd High School provides students with several graduation pathways in CTE, preparing them for careers and further education through practical skills training in fields like automotive technology and medical assisting.
