Rep. Nick LaLota's bipartisan DOE and SBA Research Act has been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill aims to enhance collaboration between the Department of Energy (DOE), National Laboratories, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Small Business Administration (SBA). It seeks to increase joint research and development activities, providing small businesses with greater access to innovation opportunities.
"Small businesses are the backbone of Main Street America, and they deserve a greater opportunity to engage in the groundbreaking research and innovation opportunities emerging from the Department of Energy’s National Labs, including Brookhaven National Lab in my district," said Rep. LaLota. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that small businesses have resources and opportunities for contributing to scientific advancements.
Rep. Kelly Morrison highlighted Minnesota's strong research ecosystem, stating that research and development drive economic growth but often lack resources for small businesses. "This bill will expand research and development opportunities for small businesses, ensuring they can remain competitive, grow, and thrive," she said.
Congressman Shri Thanedar described the act as a significant step in strengthening collaboration between DOE and SBA. "America stays ahead because of our competitive edge, and this bill will continue to fuel those efforts," he stated.
The legislation directs DOE and SBA to conduct collaborative R&D activities focused on mission requirements while mandating a report within two years. It also emphasizes research security provisions.
