Stony Brook University is addressing food insecurity on campus through its Finance & Administration Division's support of the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign. This initiative took place for the second year during Valentine's Day week, with a challenge to "DARE to CARE" by tackling food disparities.

The university community responded by donating 836.58 pounds of food, marking a 19.5% increase from the previous year's total of 700 pounds. Jed Shivers, Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration, expressed his admiration for the team's efforts: “I am incredibly inspired by the way our Finance & Administration teammates came together to support the Food Pantry Adopt-a-Week campaign. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident in the record-breaking amount of donations collected."

The Stony Brook University Food Pantry served over 4,000 students during the fall 2024 semester, doubling the number served in prior semesters combined. This surge underscores an increasing concern about food insecurity within the campus community.

Kathryn McCombs, representing the SBU Food Pantry, acknowledged this contribution: “We are so thankful to the F&A division. Thank you again for such an amazing donation—you have truly made an impact on our student population.”

Stony Brook University aims to continue this momentum with a call to action encouraging others to adopt a week at their Food Pantry.
