Congressman Nick LaLota from New York's 1st District has announced his attendance at President Donald J. Trump's Joint Address to Congress, accompanied by Lou Civello, President of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association (PBA).
“It is an honor to attend President Trump’s address and to have Lou Civello, who represents the brave men and women of Law Enforcement in Suffolk County, join me,” said Congressman LaLota. “Our Law Enforcement Officers put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe, and I am committed to ensuring they have the support and resources they need. Lou’s presence highlights the vital role our Police play and our ongoing shared commitment to improving public safety.”
Civello expressed his gratitude for representing Suffolk County Law Enforcement at this significant event. "It's an honor and a privilege to represent Suffolk County Law Enforcement at this historic event. Just as President Trump is fighting for our Country, Congressman Lalota is fighting for Long Island. Long Islanders are fortunate to have these two great leaders that support the brave men and women of Law Enforcement. Their stalwart commitment to public safety will help free our streets and neighborhoods of the violent crime plaguing them,” he stated.
Civello's involvement emphasizes Congressman LaLota’s dedication to tackling issues faced by law enforcement professionals. LaLota remains focused on policies enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement in Suffolk County.
LaLota has consistently advocated for law enforcement through various legislative efforts. These include increasing funding for officer training, mental health resources, advanced equipment, combating gang violence, and improving coordination among federal, state, and local agencies.
In January 2025, LaLota co-sponsored H.R. 31, the POLICE Act of 2025, which proposes amendments making assault on a law enforcement officer a deportable offense under immigration laws.
In January 2024, he introduced a bipartisan bill reauthorizing the COPS on the Beat Grants Program aimed at hiring new officers and boosting community policing efforts.
In May 2023, he co-sponsored the Protect and Serve Act increasing penalties against those targeting law enforcement officers.
Earlier in January 2023, LaLota also supported the Back the Blue Act focusing on harsher penalties for harming law enforcement personnel.
