Janet Hyunju Clarke, associate dean of research and learning at Stony Brook University Libraries, has been awarded the ALA Medal of Excellence Award. This annual award, presented by the American Library Association (ALA) and sponsored by global library organization OCLC, honors creative leadership in library fields, including management and training. Clarke was recognized for her role in Ready for Success, a project aimed at enhancing research skills in high school education.
Ready for Success has revolutionized research instruction at Brentwood High School on Long Island. “I am deeply pleased and proud that the ALA has recognized Janet’s work and contributions,” said Karim Boughida, dean of University Libraries. The project integrates research skills into high school curricula, preparing students with critical thinking skills crucial for college and life. Supported by the Pritchard Charitable Trust, it has been particularly impactful at Brentwood High School, where 82 percent of students are economically disadvantaged.
Clarke and her team employed a train-the-trainer approach, developing a curriculum to enhance teacher education on information literacy. This initiative has also created a new community of practice at Brentwood and strengthened partnerships between high school and college educators. Clarke has shared her expertise at conferences, culminating in the Ready for Success Summit, with over 1,200 educators and students impacted to date.
“The award committee was impressed by this innovative and vital project that partnered the public high school and the Stony Brook University libraries,” said Sara Dallas, chair of the 2025 Medal of Excellence Award committee. Clarke's leadership has redefined the teaching of research skills and strengthened the relationship between university and school libraries.
The 2025 Medal of Excellence will be presented at the ALA President’s Program on June 29 at the 2025 ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia.
