The Town of Brookhaven will hold its annual Arbor Day event on Friday, April 25, as part of Supervisor Dan Panico’s "Greening Brookhaven" initiative. From 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., residents can collect tree seedlings, mulch, and compost from the South Parking Lot of Brookhaven Town Hall at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees should bring their own shovels and containers for mulch and compost, which are available in bulk only. Available tree seedlings include varieties such as Red Pine, American Hazelnut, Bear Oak, Hybrid Poplar, Wetland Rose, Bristly Locust, Sand Cherry, and Prairie Willow. Additionally, discounted backyard composters and rain barrels can be picked up at the event if ordered by April 22 through the website brookhaven.compostersale.com.

Brookhaven residents can also collect free mulch and compost for residential use at multiple town facilities:

- Brookhaven Town Hall, South Parking Lot, Farmingville: Mon-Fri 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sat-Sun 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

- Percy Raynor Park, South Setauket: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sat-Sun 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

- Rose Caracappa Center, Mt. Sinai: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sat-Sun 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

- Brookhaven Landfill, Brookhaven Hamlet: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Sat 7:00 a.m. to noon

- Manorville Compost Facility, Manorville: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (closed for lunch from 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

- Holtsville Ecology Site, Holtsville: Mon-Fri 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

- Robert E. Reid, Sr. Recreation Center, Shoreham: Mon-Fri 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sat-Sun 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

- Centereach Pool Complex, Centereach Park closes at dusk
