Marzia Monty, a Stony Brook University alumna, recently discussed her transformative experience as a former intern in the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program. Her journey, marked by exploration and growth, underscored the importance of internships in shaping her career path.

Raised in Bangladesh with an early interest in science and math, Monty was also active in extracurricular activities. Initially aspiring for a career in medicine due to her grandfather's influence, she later switched to electrical engineering at Stony Brook University after moving to New York.

During her time at Stony Brook, she navigated various challenges, which helped her adapt to a new environment. Professors Leon Shterengas and Michael Guzman were significant influences, offering mentorship and opportunities that enhanced her academic and professional journey. They provided roles like teaching aide positions and projects that boosted her confidence and practical expertise.

Monty's internship experience at LSI Computer Systems through the SPIR program proved defining. Although initially unsure due to her indecision between pre-med and engineering, she embraced the opportunity. At LSI, she gained valuable experience in the semiconductor industry, moving from product testing to layout design. Her mentor, James Smith, was instrumental, guiding her to explore different industry facets and achieve clarity in her career focus.

The internship not only enhanced her technical skills but also provided financial stability. This allowed Monty to experience off-campus housing and achieve financial independence.
