Yuu-U ("Loy") Hashimoto, a junior majoring in biology with a minor in applied mathematics and statistics, has been named the URECA researcher of the month for October. Since March 2024, she has been working under the mentorship of Eugene Serebryany, assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Her research focuses on protein aggregation in the eye lens and a potential non-surgical treatment involving myo-inositol, a metabolite found in the human eye lens.

Holmark Garces, a 35-year-old man from Bay Shore, has been sentenced to 27 to 30 years in prison for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint and other related charges. The sentencing follows a jury's guilty verdict.
Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Communication and Journalism, Laura Lindenfeld, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, was recently invited to present to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for the Engineering Advisory Committee by Dr. Susan Marguiles. Marguiles asked Lindenfeld to provide strategies on how the NSF can strengthen communication about engineering.
Reps. Nick LaLota, Anthony D’Esposito, and Lou Correa have announced that their bipartisan legislation, the Tren de Aragua Southwest Border Security Threat Assessment Act, has passed unanimously in the Homeland Security Committee. The bill requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to conduct a threat assessment on criminal activities by members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) attempting to enter the United States illegally. It also mandates DHS to develop a strategic plan to address these threats.
David Trent, a 19-year-old from Mastic Beach, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges including manslaughter, robbery, and conspiracy to commit murder. This follows a long-term investigation into the criminal street organization known as "No Fake Love" or "NFL." Trent was one of 18 defendants indicted in December 2022.

Leo Flores-Gracias, 26, from Huntington Station, has been sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for his involvement in a fatal drunk driving crash. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the sentencing after Flores-Gracias pleaded guilty to Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and other related charges.
Stony Brook University has unveiled a new seven-foot-tall statue of its mascot, Wolfie, on the Academic Mall. The event took place on September 26 and was attended by Interim President Richard McCormick, the Spirit of Stony Brook Band, and Wolfie himself.
