Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio (R,C-Riverhead) has taken a stand for child safety in a rally of Assembly and Senate Minority members, advocating for more conspicuous labeling and child-proof packaging for edible products containing THC. The call for increased scrutiny comes in light of incidents where children have mistakenly consumed THC-infused products, leading to medical emergencies.
Giglio, a parent herself, emphasized the need for stricter regulations, stating, "With the legalization of marijuana and THC in New York, we’ve been slow to properly legislate protections on packaging to keep our kids safe." She proposed a bill that aims to make deceptive advertising or packaging of cannabis products a Class D Felony, highlighting the importance of oversight by regulatory bodies such as the New York State Cannabis Control Board or Office Of Cannabis Management.
“We cannot tolerate the misrepresentation of THC products any longer," Giglio asserted. "It’s having dire, real-world impacts on the children in our community, and it is the responsibility of the Legislature to ensure any THC edible on the market is properly marked and packaged as such.”
The push for enhanced safety measures on THC-infused product packaging reflects Giglio's commitment to safeguarding children from inadvertent exposure to cannabis products.
