Suffolk County's latest COVID-19 update on April 23, 2024, highlighted some key information concerning the ongoing pandemic. According to the CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

In terms of hospitalizations, the report for the week ending April 13, 2024, indicated a decrease in new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients. There were 66 new hospital admissions, reflecting a -35.3% change from the prior week. The hospital admissions per 100k in the past week were reported at 2.3, with the COVID-19 hospital admissions level classified as low.

On April 23, 2024, Suffolk County provided a daily hospitalization summary, revealing that 27 individuals were hospitalized, with 59% of them being hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of COVID-19. There were 4 new admissions and 4 discharges since the last report, and 1 patient was in the Intensive Care Unit.

It is important to note that hospitals in Suffolk County are no longer reporting data to NYSDOH on weekends or holidays, as indicated in the report.

Regarding fatalities, there have been a total of 5,281 fatalities in Suffolk County since March 2020, with an increase of 1 since the last report. The annual breakdown of fatalities is as follows: 2,311 in 2020, 1,507 in 2021, 1,015 in 2022, 318 in 2023, and 135 to date in 2024.

In terms of COVID-19 cases, on April 21, 2024, 27 new first-time cases were reported in Suffolk County, with a rate of 1.8 cases per 100k and 2.5 on a 7-day average.

As the county continues to monitor and respond to the COVID-19 situation, residents are encouraged to access vaccination information and testing resources available through various programs and clinics. Vaccination options are offered to uninsured and underinsured individuals through New York State's Vaccines for Children program and Vaccines for Adults program, while those with insurance coverage for the COVID-19 vaccine are advised to seek vaccination at local pharmacies, healthcare providers' offices, or federally qualified health centers.
