Michelle Sands, Sleep Apnea Director at Silent Night Therapy, said that the effects of sleep apnea extend beyond the physical, explaining that it impacts mental health and may provoke mood swings.

"Sleep apnea extends beyond physical health; it profoundly impacts mental health and mood," said Sands.

Sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, has significant effects on mental health, particularly anxiety and depression. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), interrupted sleep impacts mood regulation, leaving sufferers fatigued and prone to emotional challenges. Their research shows that those with untreated sleep apnea are two to three times more likely to experience mental health disorders due to this ongoing disruption.

"Sleep apnea alters brain chemistry by increasing the release of stress hormones like cortisol," said Sands. "This hormonal imbalance elevates anxiety levels and long-term stress. A study by the AASM found that 52% of people with untreated sleep apnea reported symptoms of anxiety, pointing to a clear connection between the two conditions."

Depression is also linked to sleep apnea due to the disruption of the sleep cycle, which affects emotional processing. According to a Cleveland Clinic study, individuals with severe sleep apnea are five times more likely to suffer from clinical depression compared to those without the disorder.

"Treatment with oral appliances, which adjust the position of the jaw to keep airways open, can significantly reduce symptoms of sleep apnea and improve mental health," said Sands. She added that many Silent Night Therapy patients using oral devices report enhanced mood, reduced anxiety, and better overall emotional well-being, making it a promising treatment option for those struggling with both sleep apnea and mental health issues.

According to the Silent Night Therapy website, Sands entered the practice in 2011, bringing with her over 25 years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Currently, she holds the position of Sleep Apnea Director. The clinic is currently focusing on a holistic approach to sleep apnea, aiming to help their patients achieve complete recovery by improving sleep quality.
