Assemblyman Joe DeStefano from Medford has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). This initiative is seen as a crucial measure for maintaining and upgrading infrastructure throughout New York state, with a particular focus on Long Island.

The CHIPS program is instrumental in providing financial support for the repair and maintenance of local roads, bridges, and highways. It plays a key role in ensuring safe transportation across New York. However, due to rising costs and ongoing needs for improvements, DeStefano has urged Governor Hochul to allocate more resources to this essential program.

“Our local roads and bridges are the backbone of our economy and vital to the safety of every resident on Long Island,” stated DeStefano. “Unfortunately, for too long we have seen the infrastructure we rely on deteriorate due to insufficient funding. It’s time to prioritize our communities’ safety and invest in the future of our state.”

As expenses related to construction materials, labor, and maintenance increase, municipalities face challenges in maintaining local roadways. CHIPS funding assists these municipalities in managing such costs but current levels are inadequate for meeting growing demands.

DeStefano is pushing for a significant increase in CHIPS funding so that local governments on Long Island can undertake necessary repairs and upgrades. This would not only enhance road safety but also create jobs and stimulate economic development within the region.

“Long Island’s roads and highways are critical to our daily lives, from commuting to supporting our local businesses. It’s essential we invest in their upkeep to ensure the safety of our residents and strengthen our local economy,” added DeStefano. “I urge Governor Hochul and my colleagues in the Assembly to recognize the importance of this investment and allocate more funds to the CHIPS program.”

DeStefano aims to collaborate with local leaders, transportation experts, and residents to secure adequate funding for Long Island's infrastructure needs.
