Assemblyman Joe DeStefano has joined forces with Assemblyman Robert Smullen and a bipartisan group of lawmakers to support the passage of Assembly Bill A.3938, known as the “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law.” The proposed legislation aims to establish a program for traffic safety memorial signs to honor victims of fatal vehicle accidents while promoting awareness about the dangers associated with reckless, impaired, or distracted driving.

DeStefano emphasized the dual purpose of the bill: "As lawmakers, we have a duty to not only honor those who have been tragically lost but also to take action that prevents future heartbreak for other families," he stated. He highlighted that the initiative is designed not just for remembrance but also as a life-saving measure reinforcing responsible driving.

The memorial law seeks to amplify the message regarding the severe consequences of reckless and distracted driving. By enabling families to commemorate their loved ones publicly, it aims to increase awareness about these risks and encourage safer driving habits throughout New York state.

DeStefano expressed his full support for Smullen's efforts: "I stand in full support of Assemblyman Smullen’s efforts to make our roads safer while ensuring families have a meaningful way to honor their loved ones." He described the bill as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Smullen family, who are using their personal tragedy as a foundation for an impactful public safety initiative.
