Assemblyman Joe DeStefano expressed his strong support for increased funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) at a recent press conference. Joined by colleagues from the Assembly and Senate Minorities, as well as county and town highway superintendents, DeStefano emphasized the importance of this investment for road repairs and infrastructure improvements across New York state.
"The CHIPS program is vital to maintaining our roads, bridges and transportation networks," stated DeStefano. He highlighted that investing in infrastructure goes beyond fixing potholes, noting its role in strengthening communities, creating jobs, and improving public safety. "Our local municipalities rely on this funding, and we must ensure they get the resources they need."
The CHIPS program provides state aid to local governments for road maintenance and rehabilitation. During the press conference, advocates stressed the necessity of securing increased funding in this year's state budget to address existing repair backlogs.
"Long Island’s roads are essential for daily commutes, emergency services and commerce," DeStefano added. He warned that without adequate funding, communities would struggle with necessary repairs. "I stand with my colleagues in government and our local leaders in demanding a fair allocation of CHIPS funds."
Local highway superintendents also underlined the need for consistent funding to prevent costly future infrastructure failures.
DeStefano committed to continue advocating for increased CHIPS funding within the state budget while urging fellow legislators to prioritize infrastructure investments.
