Assemblyman Joe DeStefano joined a coalition of bipartisan lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and advocates at a press conference to address the increasing issue of drugged driving in New York. The rise in drug-impaired driving incidents has prompted leaders from both political parties to advocate for stronger enforcement measures, improved roadside testing, and increased public awareness.

"Too many lives are being lost because of reckless decisions behind the wheel," stated DeStefano. He emphasized the need to confront the growing dangers of drug-impaired driving alongside efforts against drunk driving. "Strengthening our laws and enforcement efforts is critical to keeping our roads safe."

During the event, law enforcement officials highlighted the difficulties in detecting and prosecuting drugged drivers. They stressed the importance of advanced roadside testing and enhanced training for officers. Advocates and families affected by these incidents shared their experiences, highlighting the significant impact on communities across New York.

DeStefano and his colleagues are advocating for legislation that would enhance drug recognition training for police officers, increase penalties for repeat offenders, and invest in public education campaigns aimed at reducing drug-impaired driving.

"Keeping New Yorkers safe is not a partisan issue," DeStefano remarked. "We are standing together—Minority and Majority lawmakers—to demand action, protect lives, and ensure justice is served for victims of drugged driving."
