Assemblyman Joe DeStefano addressed the Assembly today, emphasizing the importance of music education in schools. He spoke on his resolution that acknowledges the contributions of music enthusiasts to education, highlighting music's significant impact on students' cognitive and emotional development.

“Music has always held a special place in human culture, transcending boundaries and uniting people from diverse backgrounds,” DeStefano stated. “In schools, music lovers—those who appreciate, participate in and promote music—play a critical role in enhancing the educational experience for students.”

DeStefano pointed out that research shows how integrating music into school curricula can enhance cognitive abilities, improve academic performance, and promote critical thinking. Choirs, bands, and music theory classes led by passionate educators help engage students more deeply with learning.

He also noted that beyond academics, music encourages creativity and social skills. Music lovers organize activities like concerts and talent shows, giving students chances to showcase their talents and build confidence. Participation in musical ensembles teaches collaboration and teamwork.

As an advocate for arts education, DeStefano reiterated his commitment to keeping music as a core part of the educational experience.
