High school student found with handgun during vaping search

This afternoon, shortly before the dismissal at a local high school, a student was taken to an administrator's office on suspicion of vaping. During a search using a metal detecting wand, it was found that the student had a handgun. The weapon was confiscated, and the police were promptly informed. The case has been handed over to law enforcement for further investigation. The student will face proceedings through the criminal justice system. Alongside any legal charges, the student will also encounter significant repercussions as per the school district's code of conduct.

Miller Place man pleads guilty in overdose death and infant poisoning

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney has announced that Robert Mauro, a 40-year-old resident of Miller Place, pleaded guilty to charges related to the death of a Patchogue woman and the fentanyl poisoning of an infant. Mauro admitted to Manslaughter in the Second Degree for causing the death of a 31-year-old woman and Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance after selling fentanyl to James Carr, resulting in serious injuries to Carr's infant.

Man sentenced for manslaughter after fatal New Year's Eve shooting

Detrich Emanuel, a 31-year-old man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with an additional five years of post-release supervision for the fatal shooting of Kristine Costantino on New Year’s Eve in 2023. The sentencing follows his guilty plea to Manslaughter in the First Degree made in August 2024.
